TÜV SÜD Advimo uses simulation to optimise lift use

After recent COVID-19 restrictions, businesses have been gradually returning to normal. However, minimum distances must be maintained everywhere, meaning that lifts act as bottlenecks in many office buildings. Using people flow simulation, TÜV SÜD Advimo supports businesses in planning and implementing effective restart concepts.

When a building is designed, lift demand is anticipated with the aim of making optimum use of the building. Inputs into the simulation or modelling of lift demand include key building characteristics such as the number of floors or anticipated occupancy rates. The simulation result is then used to elicit the optimum number of lifts and their design. “However, this approach can also be turned around”, says Martin Kovacevic, TÜV SÜD Advimo GmbH. The planned occupancy rates for the individual floors can be used to build a reliable model of people flows in the building, which can then be used to compute optimum lift use. “The model shows, for example, how working-from-home rates and staggered start times for employees help to avoid, or at least reduce, queues for lifts”, explains the TÜV SÜD expert. Simulation offers businesses a reliable basis for optimising occupancy of their office areas and developing strategies for effective building use in compliance with the applicable protection and hygiene measures.
