Saudi Arabia: SASO 2870/2015 comes into force for lighting products

Published on 23 June 2015, the Saudi Standard SASO 2870/2015 came into force on 1 May 2016. The standard covers the energy efficiency, functionality and labelling requirements for indirect and direct general light sources with a luminous flux above 60 lumens and below 12000 lumens according to two stages:

  • First stage (effective as of 1 May 2016): Indirect and direct lamps equal to 60 Watts or above
  • Second stage (effective as of 1 May 2016): All indirect and direct lamps below 60 Watts

The standard also includes requirements on safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and hazardous chemicals.

The covered lighting products include:

  • Incandescent lamps
  • Compact fluorescent lamps with integrated ballast (CFLi)
  • Halogen lamps
  • Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps (Incandescent retrofit types)
  • Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps (Halogen retrofit types)

All manufacturers/exporters of lighting products within the scope must comply with this standard and register with SASO to obtain the Energy Efficiency Certificate. Lighting products should affix the corresponding Energy Efficiency Labels after being registered. In addition, all lighting products shipments will be checked by Saudi Customs on arrival for the presence of the Energy Efficiency Label and Certificate in addition to the Certificate of Conformity.
