Founded in 1982, the pH Laboratories were acquired by TÜV Italia - TÜV SÜD Group in 2013. Our main offices are located in Barberino Tavarnelle (FI) and Tito Scalo (PZ), Italy. The laboratories carry out testing activities for Food Safety and Food Contact, as well as in the environmental field. In addition to these sectors there are services in the area of Healthcare, including testing on medical devices and medical gases.
As part of the international network of TÜV SÜD Group laboratories, pH Laboratories have become reliable and acknowledged partners in these areas, gaining experience, competence and reputation for chemical and biological tests (microbiology and molecular biology) accompanied by numerous accreditations obtained through ACCREDIA according to ISO 17025 and other international awards.
Tests for sustainability are crucial to and to evaluate the environmental impact of products and materials we use daily, and to ensure their safety. These tests assess whether a product can degrade naturally, contains hazardous substances, or can cause harm to the environment or to human health. Companies and manufacturers can then guarantee that their products are safe, eco-friendly, and sustainable, and consumers can make an informed, conscious choice.
pH laboratories are responsible for conducting recyclability and biodegradability tests on packaging, tests on organic cotton and food, to ensure the compatibility of such products with prescribed requirements, and to meet the needs of customers and of end consumers.
pH supports companies in defining the testing protocols necessary to ensure not only the eco-compatibility of materials but also the compliance with regulations, reference standards or any applicable regulation along the supply chain.
• Certification of biodegradable and compostable packaging in accordance with UNI EN 13432
• Recyclability tests
• GOTS tests on organic cotton for GMOs
• Analysis on products from organic farming
OBJECTIVES AND ADVANTAGES
pH Labs provide services of medical devices testing that cover manufacturer’s key needs.
Biocompatibility tests
• Chemical characterization according to ISO 10993-18
• Cytotoxicity according to ISO 10993-5
• Genotoxicity according to ISO 10993-3
• Hemocompatibility according to ISO 10993-4
Microbiology and sterility testing
• Sterility test and validation according to ISO 11737-2
• Bioburden validation and determination according to ISO 11737-1
• Endotoxins (LAL test) according to Pharmacopoeia method D 2.6.14
• Cleaning and reprocessing according to applicable standards
Chemical characterization
• Chemical Characterisation of Materials - ISO 10993-18: Also known as the extractables and leachables test.
• Chemical characterization of medical devices.
pH services for the agri-food industry include:
• chemical analyses
• microbiological and bio-molecular analyses
• sensory analyses
• analyses on materials intended for food contact
• technical-scientific services to support the analytical and sampling part
on matrices such as:
• food and beverage
• feeds
• fodder
• plants and vegetables
• drinking water
• food containers
• ceramic objects, glass, crystal
• cosmetics
• surfaces and utensils
In addition to these services, pH carries out checks on the environmental impact of agri-food production on:
• air (atmospheric emissions and work environments)
• waste and reusable materials
• sludge from purification plants
• noise and other physical agents
Food contact
Companies that produce materials in contact with food are required to comply with the requirements of Italian and European law and of the countries for which they are intended and must make available supporting documentation along the supply chain, so that the suitability of the materials for food contact can be verified.
In the analytical field, pH performs:
• global migration testing in food simulants
• specific migration tests in “worst case” simulant
• migration and metal content tests
• MOSH&MOAH
• compositional and content analysis of individual substances
• Not Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS) detection tests
• GC-MS screening tests; LC-MS; LC-Q-TOF
• sensory analysis
• technological suitability tests
according to European regulations and national regulations.
ROHS
The RoHS Directive places limits on the use of certain chemicals considered hazardous to human health such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and phthalates.
REACH
The REACH Regulation provides, on the other hand, a list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) indicating their presence limits. pH laboratories verify the compliance of MOCA and other products with the RoHS Directive and REACH by using various instrumental techniques.
The services include:
• sampling and withdrawal carried out
• analysis
• assessment of environmental impacts
• health and safety
• remediation and characterisation of contaminated sites
• technical assistance
• project management
The sampling is carried out by a team of technicians who travel throughout the country, that collects and transports the samples to be analysed according to the requirements of UNI EN ISO IEC 17025. Samples are collected according to pre-established methods and programmes so that the samples reach the laboratory on time and in the prescribed manner. Client companies can carry out sampling on their own, for which the technicians of pH provide them with instructions on how to carry it out as well as the necessary kits.
pH performs a wide range of tests on matrices such as:
• water for human use, surface water, groundwater
• wastewater
• soils and sediments
• waste
For emissions the laboratory performs:
• Sampling and analysis of gaseous emissions into the atmosphere of industrial plants
• Monitoring of atmospheric emissions for all the parameters provided for by Legislative Decree no. 152/2006, including dioxins and furans.
• Verification and calibration of EMS according to UNI EN 14181:2015.
The regulatory framework for the environment is constantly evolving, our goal is to support the customer in fulfilling legal obligations. To this end we provide the following services:
• Authorizations, modifications to existing authorizations and environmental studies
• Noise
• Characterization and remediation of polluted sites
• Environmental sustainability
pH laboratories are able to offer complete support to their customers in the field of health and safety in the workplace in order to identify, assess and control environmental factors of a chemical, physical and biological nature deriving from the production activity and that may negatively affect the health and well-being of workers.
For remediation and characterization of contaminated sites pH responds to both characteristics and may include adding the possibility to perform a wide range of analyses. The laboratory is able to search all the parameters required by the environmental regulations in force (Legislative Decree 152/06).
