TÜV SÜD: Connected with your future

Safety in highly automated driving, digital opportunities for mobility and personal communication and exchange with the transport sector will be TÜV SÜD's focus topics at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2019, held in Frankfurt/Main from 12 to 22 September. Under the banner of “TÜV SÜD: Connected with your future”, TÜV SÜD will meet guests and visitors and discuss the above topics in the exclusive TÜV SÜD Lounge from 10 to 13 September. At the press conference on 11 September, Patrick Fruth, CEO Division Mobility, will present TÜV SÜD's broad engagement in fields such as highly automated driving, battery testing, Data Trust Centres and the use of artificial intelligence in remarketing, thus providing an outlook into the future of mobility. Further issues include global commitment to safe mobility and the digitalisation of TÜV SÜD.

patrick-fruth-ts“TÜV SÜD has been involved in the design and development of highly automated driving right from the outset – from homologation to simulation and trialling scenarios worldwide“, says Patrick Fruth, CEO Division Mobility at TÜV SÜD. However, when it comes to the future of mobility TÜV SÜD has also been looking beyond the field of automated driving to address further future topics including intermodal mobility and Trust Centres for secure management of mobility data. In this context, the experts use digitalisation throughout all areas of mobility and all associated sectors. One example involves the very frequent use of rental cars or car sharing. High driver turnover rates and the accompanying increase in the number of transfer-of-risk processes are making vehicle safety a much more pressing problem.

To be able to support customers in their remarketing efforts even more comprehensively than in the past, TÜV SÜD has recently acquired a majority holding in Digital Vehicle Scan GmbH & Co. KG. 20 seconds is all it takes for the Digital Vehicle Scan (D.V.S) to complete an optical assessment of a vehicle's condition. While the vehicle drives through the system, 360° cameras scan the entire vehicle, including its underside. The system even measures the tyre inflation pressure. “This solution supplies us with a highly efficient process, involving digital applications that enable us to generate significant economies of scale. The acquisition of D.V.S. is an important building block in our digitalisation strategy”, says Fruth.

Making automated driving safe

Digitalisation and connectivity are opening up new horizons for mobility, with automated driving as a prominent example. TÜV SÜD has played a proactive role in the design and development of the new technology right from the start, based on its close partnerships with research facilities, authorities and vehicle manufacturers plus the company’s bank of in-depth expertise amassed from past collaborations and acquisitions as well as from the addition of new proven experts to the team. In this context, TÜV SÜD's role extends far beyond safety issues. The list of topics addressed at the IAA spans the following: acquisition of UNISCON GmbH (Sealed Cloud Technology); cooperation with the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) to develop openGENESIS, a platform for the validation of AI modules; participation in test fields and collaborations over global standards for vehicle design and development; and intermodal mobility models on the basis of Trust Centres. Fruth notes, “The Octagon inspires trust in mobility, even when the computer takes the steering wheel and algorithms guide us through our everyday journeys.”

How digital car dealerships work

TÜV SÜD has been supporting its customers with digitalisation for years in areas such as customer communication, where the company supplies a web-based performance measurement process for car dealerships. The range of services available extends from vehicle management to document and damage management. In this field, the focus is on standardisation of processes, shorter throughput times and cost reductions. Examples of digital solutions include BlueNOW! an advance assessment of lease returns, and Photo Fairy, an image tool delivering professional photos of used cars. Blue Button, an online damage management platform, provides customers with damage reports in the blink of an eye. Taken together, all these applications support digital control of the vehicle inventory as well as shorter turnaround times for used cars.

The face of tomorrow’s mobility

Data recorded on drivers’ journeys today will form the basis of enormous progress towards intermodal mobility. If trust is placed in technology and, above all, in the security of personal data, in future we will be able to share and communicate these data in order to organise individual mobility in an unprecedented manner. This is where sealed cloud technology comes into play. Working together with other German TÜV organisations, TÜV SÜD is currently developing Trust Centres to serve as impartial and secure platforms, via which vehicle system data which are relevant for vehicle safety and form the basis of car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications can be provided in future.

How electricity will power our driving

TÜV SÜD is the only provider of technical services which maintains a global network of seven testing laboratories for large drive batteries. TÜV SÜD is also one of the leading certification bodies for electric car charging stations in Europe, and has advocated uniform high international safety standards in electromobility for years – for example, as a partner supporting OEMs in vehicle design and development.

Automated driving, tomorrow's transport, digital services for OEMs and car dealerships, the future of periodic technical inspection and e-mobility: at IAA 2019, TÜV SÜD will showcase its full range of know-how and services in the automotive and mobility sectors. “By presenting these innovative topics at IAA, we are underlining our position as one of the leading partners of industry at one of the world's largest motor shows”, says Fruth.

IAA 2019 will host the following TÜV SÜD events:

11 September: Press conference with Patrick Fruth, CEO Division Mobility, TÜV SÜD, 12:30 pm, Hall 4.1, Stand E09.

12 September: Presentation of the Digital Dealer Performance Award (DDPA) with Ralph Meunzel, editor-in-chief of trade magazine for car dealerships, “Autohaus”, 10.00 am, Hall 4.1, Stand E09.
