TÜV SÜD has collaborated with the Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE), China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), Shanghai Intelligent Automotive Center (SIAC), and International Transportation Innovation Center (ITIC) to establish an international alliance to develop and harmonize global standards of test methods and uniformly recognized standards for automated driving. The mission of the International Alliance for Mobility Testing and Standardization (IAMTS) is the creation of an international portfolio for smart mobility test environments with the highest quality standards to effectively support the development and market launch of automated mobility.
“Intelligently connected vehicles (ICV) are being developed and tested worldwide. However, vehicle requirements, knowledge of and approaches to traffic laws, certification requirements, and testing standards vary from country to country, which is why there are still no uniform or established test methods and standards for the approval of automated driving functions. This presents a real hurdle for the testing and market launch of automated vehicles. Together with our partners, we plan to change that, and IAMTS will help develop and coordinate globally recognized standards, test scenarios, and test methods for the mobility of tomorrow,” emphasize Patrick Fruth, CEO Division Mobility, and Alexander Kraus, Senior Vice President, Global Head of Automotive at TÜV SÜD.
There is a growing need for reliable, predictable, and reproducible ICV tests that defy geographic and regulatory boundaries. IAMTS aims to merge complex information derived from global testing, verification, and validation methods and use it to accelerate the development of test methods, test scenarios and validation methods for intelligently connected vehicles; the partners will focus on both users and operators of test environments. According to Alexander Kraus, “TÜV SÜD will make targeted use of its expertise in safety testing and validation of automated and connected vehicles to actively shape the future of mobility around the world and strengthen society’s confidence in automated driving.”
From the outset, TÜV SÜD has accompanied the development of highly automated driving in a wide variety of areas. In Germany, for example, the experts are working with 16 partners from industry and science on the PEGASUS project of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to formulate requirements that must be applied to methods and tools for securing highly automated driving functions on motorways. TÜV SÜD experts are involved in the German Federal Ministry of Transport’s special committee, Driver Assistance Systems, on the revision of the standards.
In tandem with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), TÜV SÜD is developing a ‘TÜV for algorithms’ and operating a test field for companies in collaboration with the testing-ground operator for autonomous driving in Baden-Württemberg and the Karlsruhe Transport Association. It is involved in many international development projects on automated driving – such as at CETRAN (Center of Excellence for Testing and Research of AVs) at Nanyang Technology University in Singapore. TÜV SÜD-experts are also participating in the world’s first standard for the authorization of fully automated vehicles in Singapore. On top of this, the experts from TÜV SÜD are actively engaged with more than 40 partners from industry, universities, and legislators in joint projects surrounding automated and connected driving.
