TÜV SÜD enlarged its range of services for chemical management and sustainability within the fashion sector by being accepted by the ZDHC Foundation (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) as MRSL (Manufacturing Restricted Substances List) Level 1 certifier.
From now on, chemical formulators and chemical suppliers can request to TÜV SÜD to certify their compliance to the ZDHC MRSL for Level 1 that consists in testing the chemical formulation submitted through „smart testing“ accompanied by a documental review. The TÜV SÜD certification service is available in the following locations: China, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Italy.
Raffaella Santoro, Director Global Strategic Solutions Softlines for Consumer Products Services at TÜV SÜD: „The MRSL Level 1 certification represents an important milestone for TÜV SÜD and its sustainability footprint, because the more we anticipate the control on hazardous chemicals the more will be the environmental benefit and the efficiency of the chemical management at our customers“. TÜV SÜD is reconfirming to be a real holistic partner for sustainability within the fashion sector.
The ZDHC mission is to advance towards zero discharge of hazardous chemicals in the textile, leather and footwear value chain to improve the environment and people's wellbeing through the implementation of sustainable chemistry and best practices in the textile, leather and footwear industries to protect consumers, workers and the environment.
The ZDHC programme includes a collaboration of 27 signatory brands, 85 value chain affiliates, and 18 associates that work together to make sure that they are compliant with the MRSL, the list of chemical substances banned from intentional use in facilities that process textile materials and trim parts in apparel and footwear. One of the milestones of the ZDHC programme is to create a database (ZDHC Gateway - Chemical Module) where all the chemical formulators that are conform to the ZDHC MRSL are listed. This is to remove hazardous chemical from the beginning of the fashion supply chain by offering to manufacturer and fashion brands a certified chemical formulations and formulators database.
