TÜV SÜD – ensuring tyres run smoothly

TÜV SÜD is showcasing a whole array of services for the tyre industry at Tire Technology Expo 2018, the trade show to be held from 20 to 22 February in Hanover, the capital of the German state of Lower Saxony. A focus of interest this year is the alpine symbol mark for winter tyres. In Germany, the mark – depicting a snowflake against a stylised mountain range – has been mandatory for new tyres since the start of the year. TÜV SÜD contributes its expertise in the field and assists tyre manufacturers and importers with the homologation of winter tyres.

It is only logical for winter tyres to undergo testing on snow and ice according to specific criteria before they can bear the snowflake marking in line with the legal requirements. TÜV SÜD's experts can offer these tests throughout the year in a snow hall. These services are particularly interesting for tyre manufacturers from the Far East who lack such test facilities and related Know-how.

The other focal topic at the expert organisation’s stand (hall 20, stand 5000) is rolling resistance. Klaus Baltruschat, Senior Account Manager Tire & Wheels at TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH says: “In our Rolling Resistance Plus services, we can determine rolling resistance in degrees, including for camber and sideslip.” Previously, rolling resistance could only be measured on vehicles travelling in a straight line. However, now tyres have to fulfil the new requirements governing determination of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) and Real Driving Emissions (RDE). These provisions now also require measurements that take chassis geometry into account, which changes the rolling resistance. Klaus Baltruschat reports that TÜV SÜD's expertise in determination of rolling resistance is in high demand among automotive manufacturers.

Workshops on regulations

TÜV SÜD will hold a workshop on European rules and regulations before the start of the Expo. The workshop will be presented by tyre expert Lars Netsch, who has in-depth familiarity with global laws and regulations. He will provide a summary of the applicable rules and changes for interested parties.

Tire Technology Expo 2018 is the most important trade fair and conference in the field of tyre manufacturing technology. It offers visitors a showcase of the technology involved, spanning materials, equipment and services that cover the entire range of tyre manufacturing. The three-day event will open its doors on 20 February at the exhibition centre in Hanover.
