Urban cable cars – a reliable and environmentally friendly means of transport

This year TÜV SÜD joined the Cable Car World in Essen. The safety of urban cable cars is at the focus and TÜV SÜD support manufacturers, operators and planners worldwide with an extensive testing, inspection and certification (TIC) service portfolio.

Cable car inspectionTÜV SÜD’s services for cable car manufacturers, operators and planners cover certification of safety components and subsystems in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/424, initial acceptance of cable cars and drag lifts, and prescribed inspections by an authorised inspection agency as well as advisory services for operators and training offers for their employees. The expertise of the TÜV SÜD specialists is in high demand, not only in Europe’s Alpine regions, but also in conurbations and metropolitan areas worldwide.

Urban cable cars are a reliable and environmentally friendly means of transport which requires relatively little investment and can, say, close the gaps in public transport systems. When it comes to international cable car projects, the quality and scope of our expertise are important criteria for contract award by leading manufacturers. In the past two years, for example, the experts from TÜV SÜD have been involved in cable car projects in Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Hong Kong. In Mexico, TÜV SÜD evaluated the manufacturer’s documentation and the safety report for Cablebús Linea 1 in Mexico City on behalf of the manufacturer and carried out acceptance testing on site. Cablebús Linea 1 links directly to Mexico City’s main transport hub. With a total length of almost 10 kilometres and a transport capacity of 4,000 passengers per hour, it is one of the world’s largest urban cable cars.
