US FDA Updates Electronic Submission Process for Food Ingredient/Packaging Materials Submissions

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the launch of a new online option for the submission of notifications for food ingredients and food packaging materials.

Developed for the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), the new online module, known as the CSFAN Online Submission Module (COSM), allows users to electronically submit various petitions and notifications to the agency’s Office of Food Additive Safety (OFAS) as required under FDA regulations. Some of the petitions and notifications that can be submitted electronically via the COSM include:

  • Colour additive petitions
  • Food additive petitions
  • Food contact notifications
  • “Generally Recognized as Safe” notices

According to an FDA press release, the COSM provides an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process to assemble and file fully electronic submissions, thereby eliminating the need for food producers to print and mail paper submissions. However, the agency will continue to accept paper petitions and notifications.

The FDA’s press release on the implementation of its online platform for the electronic submission of food ingredient and packaging materials is available here.
