EU Draft Regulation proposes revision on the use of bisphenol A in food packaging

The EU Commission has also proposed additional changes to the use of bisphenol A (commonly referred to as BPA) in varnishes and coatings used in food packaging.

According to the terms of a draft Regulation issued in late August 2017, the Commission proposes to set new, more strict, maximum migration limits connected with the use of BPA in varnishes and coatings applied to food package materials. Further, the Commission is proposing an outright ban against the use of BPA in packaging materials used in food and food products intended for infants and young children.

The draft Regulation also establishes rules for the verification of compliance with the new BPA restrictions, including rules for migration testing and for the reporting of migration testing results. Finally, the draft Regulation requires that varnished or coated food packaging materials be accompanied by a written declaration of compliance.

Additional details on the Commission’s draft Regulation on the use of BPA in plastic food contact materials is available here. The public comment period for this draft Regulation ends on September 20, 2017.
