The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently published a supplemental draft guidance detailing strategies that food producers can use to mitigate the risk of intentional adulteration of food and food products.
Published in mid-February, the supplemental draft guidance provides information on topics from food defence corrective actions, food defence verification, reanalysis and record-keeping. The supplemental guidance also includes appendices on the FDA’s Food Defence Mitigation Strategies Database (FDMSD), a tool designed to help food producers and operators of food facilities identify mitigation strategies against intentional food adulteration.
The FDA’s supplemental draft guidance is intended to provide guidance and assistance in addition to that found in the FDA’s March 2019 draft guidance on intentional adulteration. Specifically, the supplemental draft guidance addresses intentional adulteration requirements under the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), which require food producers to implement risk-reducing strategies for processes in food facilities that are especially vulnerable to intentional adulteration.
