U.S. FSIS seeks to revise nutritional fact panel for meat and poultry

The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has proposed changes to its regulations for the nutrition fact panel required on the packaging of meat and poultry products sold in the U.S.

The proposed changes, which were published in the U.S. Federal Register in January, are intended to align nutrition labelling requirements for meat and poultry products with those approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016. The FDA labelling changes, which become effective for most food producers as of July 26, 2018, implement new formatting requirements to make it easier for consumers to identify key nutritional aspects, as well as changes to reporting requirements for added sugars and fat.

Public comments on the FSIS’s proposed changes to the nutrition panel for meat and poultry products are due by March 20th.
