Canada: Health Canada updates Industry guide to THE glazed Ceramics and Glassware Regulations

MARCH 2021 - HARDLINES

The Health Canada has recently updated the Industry Guide1 to the Glazed Ceramics and Glassware Regulations. This industry guide provides product-specific requirements on ceramics and glassware under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and Glazed Ceramics and Glassware Regulations (GCGR).

In this revision, the guide has been modified to align its general format with other more recent industry guides, align terminologies that were used in the Regulations, and update the images.

The major changes are included below:

  1. Reiteration of the provisions from CCPSA to point out that Health Canada has the authority to apply enforcement action on consumer products including ceramics and glassware.
  2. Modified the term “leachable” to “migratable”, requirements remain unchanged.
  3. Inserted the scope of products from GCGR. For decorations, it should be interpreted to include but not limited to painting, heat-pressed designs, direct screens and various decals.
  4. Newly added a product testing section. Industry members are responsible to ensure the compliance of products with Canadian safety legislation. Testing is just one of the means to verify compliance. The private laboratory can also conduct testing but they should be familiar with safety requirements, test methods and have a quality system in place.
  5. Ceramic products have been further described in Appendix A. Ceramic products include pottery, earthenware, terracotta, stoneware, porcelain and various types of fine china.
