EU: ECHA Released SCIP Database

SEPTEMBER 2021 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS, HARDLINES, SOFTLINES, TOYS AND CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) released data from the SCIP database1 (substances of very high concern in products) on 14 September 2021. This provides information for consumers and other interested parties to make informed choices and waste operators can further improve waste treatment operations.

Starting from 5 January 2021, companies supplying articles containing substances of very high concern (SVHCs) on the Candidate List in a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) on the EU market have to submit information on these articles to ECHA. This is a new obligation imposed by Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC. Around 6000 companies have submitted more than four million notifications in the SCIP database now.

Users can search the data by article name or brand, product category, type of material or chemical name. Here are the lists of most commonly notified2 products and SVHCs in SCIP notifications.

The most commonly notified product categories:
