Supporting the use of safer chemicals & better outputs

Supporting the use of safer chemicals & better outputs

The ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List or MRSL covers an elaborate list of chemical substances, which are prohibited from commercial usage in products, including textiles, leather and footwear. The usage of chemical formulations which meet regulatory requirements of ZDHC MRSL assure suppliers & customers that banned substances may only be used inadvertently during the production and manufacturing process. These chemical formulations typically include:

  • Detergents & dyes
  • Cleaners, adhesives & paints
  • Colorants
  • Coatings & finishing agents

The above chemical formulations are essentially used during raw material production, wet processing, process machinery maintenance and wastewater treatment.

ZDHC MRSL V3.1 and ZDHC Conformance Guidance V2.0 (Updated to V2.1, dated April 2024)

From 1st November 2023, only products according to the new ZDHC MRSL V3.1 and the related ZDHC Conformance Guidance V2.0 (Updated to V2.1, dated April 2024) can be uploaded.

The following changes took place on the ZDHC Gateway from 1st November 2023 onwards:

  • From 1st November 2023 products certified against MRSL V2.0 cannot be uploaded and published on the ZDHC Gateway.
  • If by 1st November a product has been only certified against ZDHC MRSL V2.0 and not against ZDHC MRSL V3.1, it will be archived and not visible on the ZDHC Gateway in the product Search, until a new valid ZDHC MRSL V3.1 certification has been uploaded.
  • The Performance InCheck Report will still show ZDHC MRSL V2.0 certified products with the historic ZDHC MRSL V2.0 status (ZDHC MRSL Conformance Levels) until 31st May 2024, or until the natural certification expiration date as highlighted in the certification uploaded in the product profile.

There are three levels of ZDHC MRSL Conformance. ZDHC MRSL Conformance Levels 1-3 provide suppliers & customers with an assurance that this requirement would be met consistently as they go from Level 1 to 3. More details are available at higher levels of ZDHC MRSL Conformance, which demonstrates a continuous production of chemical formulations.

Requirements for ZDHC MRSL Conformance levels:

  • Level 1 - Document review of SDS for information relevant to ZDHC MRSL and testing of the formulation which includes screening and analytical testing or only analytical testing.
  • Level 2 - On-site assessment of management systems plus evidence that Level 1 principles of analytical evaluation for ZDHC MRSL conformance are fulfilled.
  • Level 3 - Chemical hazard assessment capability plus evidence that Level 1 and Level 2 principles for ZDHC MRSL conformance are fulfilled.
