Visionary, future-focused concepts for safe and profitable ropeway operation will be the key topic of TÜV SÜD at Mountain Planet in Grenoble (France). Experts from the testing and certification service provider support the design and development of systems for autonomous ropeway operation as well as the realization of outdoor parks. (Stand 532)
Against a backdrop of skilled labor shortages and climate change, ropeway operators are challenged with having to find alternative solutions to ensure the safe and profitable operation of their transportation systems. “As a result, the safety and security tasks performed by operational staff are increasingly being complemented or replaced by technical solutions”, says Dr Georg Schober Department Head Transportation at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH. “This is the only way of ensuring both safe passenger transport and cost-effective ropeway operation in the long term.” TÜV SÜD experts have worked with Doppelmayr/Garaventa on their ground-breaking AURO (autonomous ropeway operation) concept, supplying verification of the correct implementation and functioning of the concept before the first AURO ropeway was taken into service in the Swiss alpine town of Zermatt. “A highly complex concept like AURO also requires a new approach to testing and inspection during design and development”, explains Dr Schober. “Our ability to draw on our experience from similarly complex projects and systems, such as the driverless metro line in Nuremberg and the development of a guideline for hyperloop systems, proved to be of great advantage.”
To compensate for winter business, which has been declining for years, and improve year-round utilization of their facilities, ropeway operators in Alpine and other highland regions have increasingly invested in outdoor parks and “summer attractions”. Many of these attractions, such as alpine coasters, flying foxes and bike parks, are fastened to natural structures and built from natural materials. “This calls for special attention during the construction, servicing and maintenance, operation and testing of these facilities”, Dr Schober points out. TÜV SÜD experts provide life-cycle support services for the realization of outdoor parks – covering feasibility studies, advisory services during design and development, document review to ensure compliance with current applicable regulations, and final inspection and approval of new facilities as well as periodic inspection of the structural state of repair and operational safety.
