Making progress with Industry 4.0 at ITAP 2019
Singapore. TÜV SÜD, the global testing, inspection, certification and training solutions provider, discusses challenges companies are facing, shares best practices for organisations to adopt and forges greater relationships within the industry at the Industrial Transformation Asia Pacific (ITAP) 2019 conference in Singapore this week.
As one of the panellist and moderator of a number of panel discussions namely the “Manufacturing CXO Summit”, and “Smart Industry Readiness Index (SIRI) Manufacturing Transformation Insights Report 2019”, Dr. Andreas Hauser, Director of Digital Service Centre of Excellence at TÜV SÜD, noted that organisations need better clarity of their own transformation journey and a proven framework to follow in order to fully realise the potential it brings. “Everyone’s transformation journey towards Industry 4.0 is different. It is important to note that this is not a race or about who gets there first. It’s about a digital transformation that improves all departments within an organisation and one that follows a ‘common framework and language’ allowing different stakeholders in the value chain to speak and collaborate with one another. SIRI is exactly that kind of framework which we need,” Dr. Hauser said.
The SIRI Manufacturing Transformation Insights Report 2019 is a follow-up to the Smart Industry Readiness Index created by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). The Report analyses data collected from the SIRI Assessments of 200 Singapore-based manufacturing facilities. They span 12 manufacturing industries, ranging from small, family-owned Singaporean enterprises to large, multinational corporations (MNCs) whose parent companies originate from 14 different countries across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.
Speaking on the second day of ITAP 2019 at the Global Additive Manufacturing Summit, guest of honour Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Education, Mr. Chee Hong Tat acknowledged TÜV SÜD’s involvement in advancing the industry and congratulated the company on choosing to locate its Industrial Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Singapore. Working in close partnership with EDB, the Centre which is expected to launch early next year, will focus on building trust in the vibrant Additive Manufacturing (AM) ecosystem as an enabler for industrial grade adoption of AM solutions. TÜV SÜD’s Centre of Excellence will help position Singapore as a regional hub for testing and certification and expands her global relevance as a hub for high-end solution development.
Also speaking at ITAP 2019 were Dr. Artem Vorobiev, Senior Principal Consultant at TÜV SÜD and Mr. Suhas Sherkar, Principal Consultant at TÜV SÜD, who hosted a Masterclass on “Ensuring Cybersecurity for Digital Factories”. Their presentation covered cybersecurity challenges organisations are facing with the increased connectivity of smart machines that Industry 4.0 brings.
TÜV SÜD established “Gateway to Industry 4.0” at the conference, a 485 square metre curated immersive gallery designed to bring visitors on an experiential journey through the evolution of Industry 4.0. The goal of the gallery was to inspire delegates to implement Industry 4.0 concepts through showcases of successful deployments, enabling technologies, and actual benefits. Throughout the show, delegations of attendees, including many focused on Advanced Manufacturing and Precision Engineering, viewed a range of Industry 4.0 tools and technologies, with examples of how applications and methodologies are applied in highlighted projects, such as collaborative robots and axis milling machines. Notable guests include Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for Singapore, Mr. Heng Swee Keat.
TÜV SÜD also signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) that highlighted the organisation’s commitment to working closely with the industry to provide the right expertise in the areas of certification, inspection and auditing.
The MoU with the NUS Centre for Additive Manufacturing (AM.NUS) at the National University of Singapore promotes R&D activities in the area of 3D-printed biomedical implants for clinical trials. AM.NUS seeks to bring innovative products to the field of healthcare that will improve patient outcomes and change lives for the better. The centre strives to explore a whole new dimension in Medical Additive Manufacturing, applying innovative 3D printing technology for personalised patient treatments.
The second MoU cements TÜV SÜD’s partnership with thyssenkrupp Innovations Pte. Ltd., a leading additive manufacturing and service provider. The collaboration will look to develop the market for additive manufacturing-enabled solutions in the Asia Pacific region. Both companies will work together over a period of three years to set up industrial-grade manufacturing solutions, as well as testing, inspection, and certification services for land transport and mobility, and industrial plant services.
