Tubular Inspection

Cost effective inspection of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic tubes

What is tubular inspection?

Industrial facilities typically rely on massive environmental control systems, including air coolers, chillers, boilers, condensers, evaporators and heat exchangers. These systems incorporate extensive lengths of metal tubing that are subject to mechanical and thermal stresses under normal use. However, identifying possible wear or other defects can be difficult since tubing is typically inaccessible for direct visual inspection.

Tubular inspection involves the use of various technologies to remotely evaluate the internal and external condition of tubes. Most often, probes are inserted into the tube under examination, and data is recorded for evaluation and assessment. The type of technology used depends on the nature and condition of the tubing to be examined, and the speed required for data acquisition.

What are the advantages of tubular inspection?

When used as part of a standard preventative maintenance program, tubular inspection is a cost-effective method to identify potential tubing defects in advance of equipment failures, enabling operators to address problems before they result in unexpected and expensive shutdowns. In addition, the collection and analysis of tubular inspection data over time can also help to identify tubular wear trends, allowing for the efficient and timely scheduling of repair tasks or tubing replacement. Tubular inspections are also inspected on-site, minimizing equipment downtime.

Why use TÜV SÜD America for your tubular inspection requirements?

TÜV SÜD America, Chemical, Oil and Gas conducts tubular inspections on most types of industrial environmental control systems using the most advanced tubular inspection techniques available. In addition, we can provide other advanced nondestructive testing and analysis services at customer site locations and in the field to provide maximum flexibility. TÜV SÜD’s inspection professionals are certified to the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level III and Level II requirements, enabling us to provide clients with efficient and accurate testing and analysis.

Our services at a glance

TÜV SÜD tubular inspection services include:

  • Eddy current testing - An electromagnetic technique that sends electrical currents into conductive, non-ferromagnetic materials, such as stainless steel, copper, nickel, brass and titanium.
  • Remote field testing (RFT) - Another electromagnetic technique that takes advantage of low electromagnetic frequencies to identify general or local corrosion or erosion in ferromagnetic materials.
  • Internal rotary inspection system (IRIS) testing - This technique employees an ultrasonic immersion pulse echo technique to inspect ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials.
