Guided Wave Ultrasonic Inspection

A pioneer in the use of guided wave ultrasonics in inspection services

What is guided wave ultrasonic inspection?

Guided wave ultrasonic testing uses low frequency signals to quickly and efficiently survey pipe for potential internal and external corrosion. It allows for the inspection of extended lengths of inaccessible piping from a single remote location. As an added benefit, guided wave ultrasonic inspection and testing can usually be performed while the pipe is in service, reducing inspection costs and production downtime.

Guided wave ultrasonics can effectively be used for inspection and testing in the following situations:

  • Inaccessible areas, such as cased road crossings
  • Insulated piping systems
  • Piping that passes through dikes and concrete walls
  • Jetty and wharf piping
  • Boiler and heater tube inspections
  • Offshore piping (splash zones)
  • Buried pipelines between excavations
  • Overhead piping on towers
  • Piping to locate welds and attachments

Our services at a glance

TÜV SÜD Chemical, Oil and Gas offers guided wave ultrasonic inspection, testing and monitoring of above and below ground piping. We utilize Teletest Focus® and Guided Ultrasonics G3® technologies to isolate pipe areas of concern and to identify location, size and circumference of problem areas. These and other advanced inspection and testing techniques increase inspection efficiency and produce more reliable results.

TÜV SÜD can also provide permanently installed monitoring systems to allow for repeated guided wave inspections over an extended period, reducing the time and cost for inspection and testing. A permanent monitoring system also allows increased repeatability of testing results and makes it easier to locate and identify small defects.
