What is digital radiography?

Digital radiography is a form of computerized radiography that uses ASTM-compliant digital detector arrays (“panels”) to capture an image electronically, allowing it to be sent to a computer for immediate processing and analysis. The digital detector array produces high quality images with superior resolution and dynamic range, and eliminates the need for imaging plates and scanners.

Digital detector arrays can be used with either x-ray machines or gamma isotopes, making them useful for a variety of applications in permanent installations or in the field. Digital detector arrays are available in different sizes to meet application-specific requirements.

Digital radiography offers the following advantages:

  • No time-consuming film processing or film loading/unloading
  • No hazardous waste disposal or clean up related to the use of film chemicals
  • Allows the radiographer to correct exposure geometry or exposure time immediately, eliminating reshots
  • Instantaneous image processing and reporting
  • Inexpensive and compact image storage on a variety of image media
  • Requires smaller restricted areas and less downtime to conduct evaluations
  • Reduces potential radiation exposure and other health and safety risks

Digital radiography is an essential nondestructive evaluation and testing method used in high-value operations with mission-critical applications. It can be used for weld inspections, internal corrosion or erosion, casting and valve inspections and concrete inspections. Digital radiography is particularly useful for evaluating external corrosion under insulation, checking the integrity of pipe supporting systems, and identifying “dead legs” in extensive piping installations.
