Employing advanced ultrasonic imaging techniques for flaw detection and sizing
C-scan and B-scan Ultrasonic testing is widely used to detect and size flaws and other imperfections in critical piping and components. The data collected through the use of ultrasonic imaging systems and technologies can be displayed in a number of different formats, with each format providing important information regarding the material under inspection.
B-scan Ultrasonic Testing provides a two-dimensional graphic presentation, in which the travel time of an ultrasonic pulse is plotted along the vertical axis and the linear position of the transducer is plotted along the horizontal axis. The resulting B-scan image provides detailed information on both the size and the depth of a detected material flaw.
C-scan Ultrasonic Testing also produces a two-dimension image, in which the location and size of discontinuities identified as a result of the scanning are displayed in a top view of the material surface under test.
These advanced ultrasonic scanning techniques offer several advantages over standard ultrasonic thickness measurements. These include the ability to create a single image that represents the entire length of a given inspection area, and the ability to generate hard copies of the images that are produced. And C-scan and B-scan ultrasonic testing can typically be completed in less time than conventional ultrasonic scanning techniques.
