Using Advanced and Emerging Technologies to Address Today’s Inspection Challenges

Nondestructive testing (NDT) represents a range of assessment methods for determining the quality and integrity of materials, components, products and systems. As the name implies, nondestructive testing techniques do not affect the usefulness or serviceability of the material or product after testing has been completed. For these reasons, nondestructive testing is widely used in manufacturing, product fabrication and in-service inspection operations.

Some of the advanced nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques routinely used in chemical, oil and gas operations include:

  • Real-time radiography (RTR) - Uses low-dose x-rays to produce electronic images. Commonly used for the prompt and efficient inspection of pipes.
  • Guided wave (GW) ultrasonic inspection - Uses ultrasonic energy to identify areas of wall loss within a pipe.
  • Electro-magnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) - Induces an alternating current within a magnetic field to detect wall loss and isolated defects.
  • Phased array (PA) ultrasonic inspection - Utilizing high-speed electronic scanning without moving parts, PA ultrasonic inspection collects images from multiple angles with a single probe.
  • Time of flight diffraction (ToFD) Ultrasonic Inspection - A multi-mode ultrasonic inspection technique that measures the flight time of sound energy through a material.
  • Alternating current field measurement (ACFM) - Often used in place of conventional magnetic particle and liquid penetrant testing to detect and size cracks in most metals.
