Can you describe your role within TÜV SÜD?
I work in the Financial Controlling Group, which is managed by Jason Hamelin. My title is Financial Analyst, but the role we perform is controlling, which refers to the analytical and planning side of all the finances, such as the actual performance, budgeting, and forecasting. We work independently, but coordinate with Accounting. It’s a bit non-traditional within the United States because controllers are usually more on the accounting side, whereas here we are purely an independent financial group.
How did you choose this career path?
I wanted something sustainable in terms of job security. I was always interested in business and I started out by looking into international finance and supply chain. Corporate finance caught my eye in part due to some of my undergraduate professors, as well as my colleagues. I have a unique opportunity here in the fact that I’ve been able to do a tremendous amount of learning while having exposure to the inner workings of the company. Having various divisions and businesses all rolled into one parent is rare to be a part of this early on in one’s career. This role seemed like the best opportunity for me.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The team. The challenges we encounter are not completely unique to this role or to TÜV SÜD. We really do have loyalty, a strong bond, and share a common vision. There’s a willingness to help each other within my group that is rare to have.
Are there any challenges you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Coordinating globally is a challenge; it’s not the language, time zone, or cultural barrier, though. Here, we have helpful recurring face-to-face meetings. You can only achieve so much through email and a phone call. I know many industries are trending towards remote communication and collaboration on a global scale, so to some degree it must be done with technology. However, there are some things you can’t achieve remotely, so that can present a challenge considering the number of global partners we coordinate with. But you learn to adapt and make it work.
When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I like to drive around the New England area, go to the gym as often as I can, and spend time with family.
Do you have anything else to add?
I believe that the core group at TÜV SÜD, encompassing both the leadership and the teams, is made up of high performing and decent people. The company culture and the people who make it is a big part of why this company is great.
