What is a railway Independent Safety assessment?

A railway independent safety assessment (ISA) assesses the overall system, including all subsystems, throughout the whole rail lifecycle to ensure the definition and implementation of the Safety concept is thorough and adequate. From as early as the planning phase, this independent safety assessment helps suppliers, operators and system integrators prevent failures before they occur and to ensure their systems are compliant to the railway-specific safety requirements and global standards. Railway systems are becoming increasingly complex which makes it challenging to accurately analyse and ensure system safety. To do so requires knowledge beyond technical safety and into operational safety.
