The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed new restrictions on the use of trans fats in food products.
Published in 'The Gazette of India' in late August, the draft regulation would strictly limit the amount of trans fatty acids in all food products in which edible oils and fats are used as an ingredient. Specifically, the amount of trans fats would be limited to not more than 2% by weight of the total amount of fats and/or oils used in the product.
If enacted into law, the limit on trans fats would take effect on January 1, 2022.
Comments on the proposed trans fats limits can be submitted by email before the end of September.
The complete text of the proposed limits on trans fats as published in 'The Gazette of India' is available here.
