JUNE 2021 - TOYS AND CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS
The European Commission (EC) proposed to restrict the presence of aniline in certain toys in September 20201. On 4 June 2021, Directive (EU) 2021/9032 was published to amend Appendix C to Annex II to the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC to add new limit values for aniline in toys intended for use by children under 36 months or in other toys intended to be placed in the mouth. This will come into effect from 5 December 2022. The new restriction is summarised in Table 1 below.

The presence of aniline in certain toys is currently being restricted by the toy safety standard EN 71-9 and EN 71-7, of which its latest version – EN 71-7:2014+A3:2020 was recently harmonised3. The requirements are summarised in Table 2 below.
