TÜV SÜD validates Nexigen® PCF Algorithm by Klöckner & Co

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

As companies have to comply with ever stricter sustainability requirements, transparent verification of greenhouse-gas reduction measures is taking on an increasingly significant role. Klöckner & Co has developed an algorithm for calculating the carbon footprints of its products, which has now been validated by TÜV SÜD.

TÜV SÜD verifies the methodologies applied by companies in determining their carbon footprints, examining their plausibility and compliance with the applicable rules and standards. Carbon footprints can be calculated for companies in the form of a corporate carbon footprint (CCF), or as a product carbon footprint (PCF) for a specific product. Systematic approaches to the objective determination of carbon footprints are set forth in ISO standards 14064 and 14067 for CCF and PCF respectively.

Klöckner & Co, one of the world’s largest producer-independent steel and metal distributors and a leading steel service company, developed the Nexigen® PCF Algorithm used to determine the PCF of roughly 200,000 products in its portfolio. PCF determination takes all process steps into account, from extraction of raw materials to product delivery to the customer’s entry gate.

TÜV SÜD validated the calculation method underlying the Nexigen® PCF Algorithm. Its validation confirms that the method is in conformity with the applicable requirements of ISO 14067, ref. 14040 and 14044 standards as well as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. TÜV SÜD will periodically verify the calculation method and logic by sampling individual products. The validation statement applies to the current version of the Nexigen® PCF Algorithm. When updates are made to the tool, validity is ensured by a further checks.

As a third-party testing and certification organisation, TÜV SÜD further offers comprehensive support with verification and certification of climate neutrality in accordance with PAS 2060 and with carbon footprint verification on the basis of the ISO 14064 and 14067 standards.
