TÜV SÜD Certifies Huawei’s Grid-Forming System

Shanghai/China. TÜV SÜD recently awarded a certificate of compliance to Huawei Digital Power Technologies Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as "Huawei Digital Power") for its grid-forming energy storage system. This system marks the first overseas certification of such a system achieved through on-site verification by TÜV SÜD, underscoring Huawei's capability to build grid stability in line with international standards. This certification emphasises the crucial function that such systems will perform in ensuring future grid stability.

As renewable energy technology advances and becomes widely adopted, new energy system’s role in stable grid operations has become a key focus for the industry. In recent years, countries with high penetration rates of photovoltaic and wind power, have experienced significant grid failures, emphasising the importance of grid-forming technology in ensuring grid stability and promoting the sustainable development of new energy sources.

Technological Breakthrough: Multi-Dimensional Verification of Grid Stability

As the share of new energy in power systems rises, grids worldwide are demanding clearer requirements for the grid-forming capabilities of energy storage systems, including grid-forming energy storage systems, large-capacity batteries, high-power converters, and complex control algorithms. Grid-forming technology requires large-capacity energy storage systems and rapid, accurate power electronics control systems. It also requires stability analysis which is provided by the interaction between distributed power stations and power systems to actively support the algorithm for stable grid operation.

Meeting grid stability criteria, such as providing inertia to maintain frequency and voltage stability during grid disturbances and providing black start capability after incidents, poses higher technical requirements for the architecture and control systems of grid-forming energy storage systems. The certification of these systems serves as a technological “passport” and at the same time provides important technical evidence of grid safety, accelerating infrastructure development.

The global testing and certification organisation TÜV SÜD with extensive experience in renewable energy and grid technology regulations, developed the grid-forming system technical standard PPP 58232. This standard requires the empirical testing of key functions in new energy generation and storage systems to actively ensure grid stability. The standard focuses on analysing actual performance to provide reliable engineering solutions for standardising grid-forming technology.

In early 2025, TÜV SÜD utilised the PPP 58232 standard to conduct an empirical analysis of the grid-forming technology used by Huawei Digital Power in its photovoltaic storage system in Cambodia, taking local grid conditions and power company requirements into account. Through this certification process, TÜV SÜD conducted multi-scenario empirical testing and confirmed that Huawei's system meets the key functional performance indicators and parameters outlined by advanced grid technology regulations at the international and European levels. This demonstrates the system's safety and stability in operation.

Industry Empowerment: Setting New Benchmarks for Overseas Projects

In the context of the global trend of high levels of renewable energy penetration into grids, the stability support technology of new energy generation has become driving force behind technological evolution in the industry. TÜV SÜD's certification of Huawei’s grid-forming system validates its applicability in the complex grid environments of Southeast Asia and establishes the empirical basis for developing stable and reliable smart grids. This provides a replicable model for the construction of clean, low-carbon, and efficient energy systems worldwide.
