Lift certification case study: TK Elevator

TWIN Passenger Lift

TWIN Passenger Lift

Since the first generation of TWIN passenger elevators, TK Elevator (formerly known as Thyssenkrupp) has relied on the know-how of TÜV SÜD to certify the special safety technology. At the moment, the fourth generation elevator, the TWIN, is being installed in many locations. It is an innovative invention with two passenger baskets in a shaft moving independently of each other. This allows the lift to handle high frequency rate and save space at the same time.

The associated special Type Examination was carried out by TÜV SÜD New Technologies in the field of Lift department. Mark Dietz, an expert in electronics in the field of conveyor technology, explained that this is a particularly challenging type testing as there are two cabins. The elevator deviates from the usual DIN EN standard. Thus, a Design Examination certificate was also necessary. In 2019, Dietz and his colleagues tested the TWIN elevator in the test tower in Rottweil, which kickstarted the installation of the fourth generation TWIN elevator worldwide. Today, TWIN elevators are installed in many locations such as the European Central Bank in Frankfurt Hudson Yards in Manhattan and National Bank of Kuwait.
