Cybersecurity for Residential Gateway / Home Routers

IMDA requirements for the Singapore market

The residential gateway or also known as home routers is an important device in every home networking setup. The home router / residential gateway allows multiple devices in your home to share one internet connection via Wi-Fi.

Why is cybersecurity for residential gateways / home routers important?

The increased use of home routers is paired with the uptake of smart devices such as web cameras, sensors and baby monitors. These residential gateways are prime targets for cyber attacks due to various vulnerabilities such as weak password and out-of-date software. Hence, it’s important to ensure the home routers / residential gateways are secure from cyberattacks. Home routers are the primary devices used  by normal consumers for home internet service. They may not be well-versed in protecting themselves against cyber threats. Hence it is important to make the home router upon purchasing them.

The Technical Specifications for Residential Gateways from IMDA

In October 2020, Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced its plan to set minimum security requirements for home routers, to secure Internet experience for users, and to strengthen the resilience of Singapore’s telecommunications networks. They have since then published the Technical Specifications for Residential Gateways or more commonly known as home routers sold in Singapore. The Technical Specifications will put in force by 12 April 2021. Existing home routers previously approved by IMDA can continue to be sold until 12 October 2021. And after this date, all Residential Gateways sold for local use in Singapore shall comply with the IMDA TS RG-SEC.

Why choose TÜV SÜD for cybersecurity in residential gateways / home routers?

TÜV SÜD can facilitate and review your residential gateways / home routers based on IMDA’s specifications. Wi-Fi home routers which comply with IMDA’s specifications shall pass and register for Level 1 of the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore’s Cybersecurity Labelling Scheme. We will advise and review your residential gateways / home routers to comply with the Cybersecurity Labelling Scheme as stated by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore.
