MARCH 2023 - TOYS AND CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has accepted the recent voluntary standard ASTM F406-22 as the new mandatory standard for non-full-size (NFS) baby cribs, allowing the revision of the standard incorporated by reference in the 16 CFR 1220. The revised standards1 will be effective on 3 June 2023 unless the Commission receives significant adverse comments by 5 April.
The December 2022 revision to ASTM F4062 includes two substantive changes to the voluntary standard that improve the safety of NFS cribs. One modification addresses strangulation hazards by clarifying the requirements and testing of cords and straps, which previously applied only to accessories, and now apply as a general requirement to all parts of products within scope. The other modification extends the scope of the voluntary standard to all NFS cribs marketed for play, sleep or both. This prevents manufacturers from attempting to exempt their products from the standard by stating that the product is intended solely for play.
