This basic training course focuses on the basics of additive manufacturing. First, a general description of the technologies summarised under the term additive manufacturing is given as well as their differentiation from the long-established manufacturing processes and the characteristic layer-by-layer structure is discussed. Advantages but also existing disadvantages, which a layered component construction brings with it, are shown.

Material groups and frequently used materials are discussed as well as future potentials.

The various fields of application are illustrated with the help of specific examples. Possibilities for the use in series production or the production of individualised products are presented and evaluated from a technical and economic perspective. Furthermore, possibilities will be shown how existing components and entire assemblies can be meaningfully substituted by AM components and which areas of application are currently being developed and will arise in the future.
