With effect from 1 January 2021, Hans Joachim Machetanz will take the helm as the new CEO of TÜV SÜD Chemie Service GmbH. In his former position as COO, Machetanz (52) has already played a significant role in the successful development of this full-service provider for the chemical and process industries. Hans Joachim Machetanz succeeds Thomas Walkenhorst, who will take the role of CFO at TÜV Hessen.
TÜV SÜD Chemie Service GmbH was formed from the former owner’s inspectorates and owner’s engineering departments at the German chemical and pharmaceutical groups of Bayer, Hoechst and Dow Chemicals and has evolved into a full-service provider for the industry over the past 15 years. By successfully positioning itself on both the German and international markets, the company acquired many new customers, growing its headcount from 80 to more than 200 in the process.
In his role as CEO, Joachim Machetanz will continue to consistently drive the successful development of TÜV SÜD Chemie Service. “Our main goal is to make our services an integral part of the procurement and operation of equipment in the chemical, pharmaceutical and process industries”, says Machetanz. “We are deeply rooted in the chemical industry and thus ideally suited for this task. Around 75 percent of our highly qualified staff learned the ropes in the chemical sector.” The experts thus also understand the challenges that the industry is facing at present, and continually develop and improve their services further using innovative test methods such as acoustic emission testing (AT) and providing solutions to improve IT systems.
Like TÜV SÜD Chemie Service itself, Hans Joachim Machetanz is also rooted in the chemical industry. After completing a dual study programme at Bayer AG with final degrees in industrial and process engineering, he started his professional career in 1996 as an operating engineer at a Bayer company in Leverkusen. In 2000 he joined the owner’s inspectorate of Bayer AG, where he worked in the role of expert. The owner’s inspectorate became part of the newly established TÜV SÜD Chemie Service GmbH in 2005. Since then Machetanz has worked in numerous international projects for key accounts, including Bayer Material Science, Wacker AG and Celanese (Ticona). In 2012 he moved to Lanxess in Singapore, where he was head of quality assurance in global procurement of plant components for the Engineering segment. After his return to TÜV SÜD Chemie Service in 2015, he held the position of Business Unit Manager Plant Monitoring in Leverkusen before being appointed COO in 2017.
