Expert partner in smart and digital automation

At SPS IPC Drives, taking place in Nuremberg from 27 to 29 November 2018, TÜV SÜD will showcase an extensive service portfolio for the automation industry. In the focus of TÜV SÜD's presence at the trade fair are services in the fields of robotics, drive and control systems, international approval procedures and explosion protection. (Hall 4, Stand 521).

TÜV SÜD supports the automation industry in making smart and digital solutions safe and reliable. The international provider of testing and certification services boasts in-depth familiarity with legal regulations and a global network of experts and testing laboratories. For robots and automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems, the experts at TÜV SÜD Product Service perform CE conformity assessment and certification for the EU Single Market as well as certification for the US and Canadian markets. Their tests always take into account the possible hazards involved in these complex systems and the pertinent safety measures taken by manufacturers and integrators. Collaborscative robots known as ‘cobots’ pose particular challenges, as they involve strict safety requirements and application-specific test plans to ensure safe human-robot collaboration (HRC).

Functional safety for automation solutions

Manufacturers of automation solutions must reduce the safety risks of their systems to an acceptable level. Failures of safety functions can result in extensive liability requirements. Functional safety requirements are regulated in the IEC 61508 international standard. TÜV SÜD's service portfolio in this area covers third-party assessment of safety-related aspects, certification, knowledge services and training. TÜV SÜD Rail holds accreditation as a certification body for the relevant directives and industry standards, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061, ISO EN 13849-1, 2006/42/EC and ISO 26262, and performs certification for parts and systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), safety components according to the Machinery Directive, safety-related data communication and bus systems, safety-process integration (functional safety management, FSM), process-control engineering/ automation and mechanical components.

CB Scheme – a single certificate for more than 50 markets

Electronic machines require controls and frequency inverters. For manufacturers of frequency inverters to succeed at international level, their products must satisfy the requirements of the individual target markets. Manufacturers wishing to place their products on the EU market need to affix the CE marking – which, however, is not recognised in the USA, Canada and other regions. TÜV SÜD is thoroughly familiar with the requirements in the individual markets, holds OHSA accreditation and can offer manufacturers all the tests and certifications required to have their products approved for the EU, US or Canadian markets. TÜV SÜD also participates in the CB Scheme of the IECEE. The experts offer tests in almost all product categories covered by this scheme, confirming the electrical, thermal and energy-related safety and other characteristics of frequency inverters according to IEC 61800-5-1. The CB Scheme is an international system for mutual recognition of test results and certificates related to the safety of electrical and electronic components, equipment and consumer products. More than 50 countries participate in the scheme.

Given the increasing connectivity of machinery and systems, manufacturers and operators should also consider the IEC/EN 61010-2-201 “Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use“ and IEC/EN 62368-1 “Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment” standards. Their requirements must be fulfilled by all ICT equipment from 20 December 2020 onwards. IEC/EN 62368-1 replaces the previous IEC/EN 60065 and IEC/EN 60950-1 standard by introducing hazard-based safety engineering. At SPS IPC Drives, TÜV SÜD's experts will inform manufacturers what to look out for when implementing the new standard.

ATEX and IECEx – two schemes, one certificate

Offering explosion protection testing according to international standards including ATEX and IECEx, TÜV SÜD Product Service furnishes proof that machinery, components and equipment are suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Products to be approved for the EU market need to show compliance with the European ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. The IECEx method enables global approval to be obtained for explosion-proof products. TÜV SÜD offers manufacturers a single certification, giving them the opportunity of proving compliance with both ATEX and IECEx requirements. A valid IECEx certificate is also one of the prerequisites for further international approvals under regulations such as the “Hazardous Locations” standard for the US market.

Talks presented by TÜV SÜD at SPS IPC Drives:
