The sources of contaminants during process of cultivation to packaging will find its way in tea if not controlled within limits or prevented. The major contaminants found in tea are pesticide residue, heavy metals, mycotoxins and microbiological contaminants. Also, absence of adulterants is one of the main factors which govern quality of the tea. Several countries have established stricter norms to preserve the quality aspects of the tea and ensure consumer safety.

To ensure that the risk of contaminants such as pesticide residue, heavy metals, mycotoxins and microbiological contaminants is mitigated, it is extremely critical to adopt regulated norms that demonstrate the quality of the tea while ensuring consumer safety.
To determine its quality, testing of tea for pesticide residue, heavy metals, Ochratoxin A and microbiological tests such as Yeast and Mold, E. Coli and Salmonella along with physiochemical test viz. iron filings, polyphenols, etc., is inevitable.
To safeguard consumers from agrochemical residues, it is imperative to screen pesticide residues on an extensive scale, considering the possibility of their presence in produce through application during cultivation & unintended sources and their magnification during tea processing.
