Our competencies in conventional, high-speed, metro and light rail are backed by many years of experience working on global rail projects and our collaboration with railway authorities and stakeholders worldwide. We are operating our own railway testing facilities and have proprietary testing tools for rolling stock and railway components.

Presentation 1: When to modernise as an alternative to procure new rolling stock?

Presenter: Dr. Stephan Liedl, Lead Assessor Metro - Light Rail / Rolling Stock

Abstract: Keeping existing rolling stock in operation can be a valuable alternative to procuring new rolling stock, even when facing higher performance requirements and raising comfort expectations. Finding smart & cost-effective solutions for maintaining or enhancing operational capacity and meeting customer quality demands, is a challenge. Budget constraints, local conditions, long delivery times & high costs for new urban rail vehicles makes it interesting to evaluate the option of modernisation & refurbishment. A key task for decision makers is to make the right choice on whether to procure new rolling stock or to modernise existing fleets. Modernisation can be a cost-efficient solution to exploit the initial vehicle investment over the full life time; to offer up-to-date transport service. Lower cost & reduced projects risks for modernisation could also outweigh the benefits from new vehicle procurement.

Presentation 2: Alternative Propulsion – Hydrail and Bi-/Trimodal Propulsion in the rail sector

Abstract: With a push for greener transport systems and the inherent challenges posed by current battery systems, hydrogen technology is emerging and tipped by many to be a potential solution. Green energy production from sources such as wind, waves, tides and sun are on the rise, but this creates new challenges for current electrical distribution systems. Meanwhile the costs of electrification of our transport systems combined with capacity limitations of our electrical grids leads us to continue using fossil fuels. Hydrogen fuel cell powered transport systems could give us cleaner transport systems, energy storage for green energy production and avoid costly investment in electrical grid upgrades. The first passenger rail vehicles are now in commercial operations. Hydrogen-motors can also use gray hydrogen and is free available, because this is a waste product of the chemical industry and this gas must burn off.
