Course overview

Drawing on our extensive practical experience in Functional Safety and active involvement with relevant standard bodies, we deliver expert training aligned with the cross-industry generic standard IEC 61508, 2nd Edition.

The training focuses on the first three parts of IEC 61508, supported by case studies and practical examples to clearly demonstrate procedures and deliverables. Key safety lifecycle processes are introduced, alongside explanations of the associated tasks and responsibilities.

Target AudiencE

This training is designed primarily for developers, testers, project leads, quality representatives and safety officers engaged in the development of programmable electronic safety systems and seeking implementation based on the internationally recognised IEC 61508 standard.

Content and Modules

The IEC 61508 programme consists of individual one-day modules, which can be booked separately or combined to suit your training needs.

Module 1: Introduction, Functional Safety Management and System Analysis

This module covers the implementation of Functional Safety Management (FSM) as required by Part 1 of IEC 61508 to provide an organisational framework for safety-related electronic system development. After an introduction to Functional Safety and the sector overview, it examines safety management tasks, conceptual aspects, design criteria of standards, and approaches for functional concept design and system analysis. The day concludes with an introduction to requirements engineering essentials.

Ideal for: Management executives, project managers, safety and quality management professionals, and all personnel involved in functional safety projects.

Module 2: Development and Evaluation of Safety-Relevant Hardware

This module explores the application of mathematical and analytical methods to verify hardware designs compliant with IEC 61508 Part 2 requirements. A case study provides detailed insights into the systematic analysis approach and calculation of probabilistic safety parameters.

Ideal for: Hardware and software developers, functional safety project leaders, safety managers and technical operators.

Module 3: Development and Evaluation of Safety-Relevant Software

Focusing on Part 3 of IEC 61508, this module introduces the methods, procedures, documentation and software safety lifecycle essential for developing safety-relevant software. Practical examples illustrate key principles and procedural requirements.

Ideal for: Software and hardware developers, heads of functional safety projects, and safety managers responsible for software safety.

Functional Safety Certification Programme IEC 61508

Our FSCP enables you to achieve recognised expertise in Functional Safety through certification at various levels. Upon successful completion of the assessment, participants receive a qualification certificate corresponding to their chosen FSCP level and are listed on our official website.

• Level 1: Functional Safety Engineer IEC 61508
• Level 2: Functional Safety Professional IEC 61508
  • Requirements: A minimum of six years’ professional experience in functional safety, which may be reduced to two years depending on educational qualifications (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree), plus documented participation in at least two functional safety projects.
• Level 3: Functional Safety Expert IEC 61508
  Conditions: Available upon request.

The written examination at Levels 1 and 2 is three hours in duration. Our certificates have no expiry date, recognising lifelong achievement in functional safety competence.
