Worldwide, only 2% of human waste is disposed of safely when there is no service chain. While many people lack access to any type of toilet facility, still more use systems that do not provide any type of treatment for the resulting waste. This untreated waste flows directly into soils and water systems, causing not only environmental damage but also widespread disease.

In response to this crisis, the United Nations established Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.

“Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”

Public, private, and citizen-led organisations have taken this challenge head-on, committing time and resources to help the 2.3 billion people in the world without access to safe sanitation.


The modern system of sewer infrastructure cannot solve this problem due to its extremely high demands for water, energy, raw materials, and large-scale coordination. New technologies provide the basic expected functions of a user experience while addressing modern day issues like environmental sustainability and effective solutions for the sanitation crisis.

This new generation of toilet technologies can surpass the old model of sewer infrastructure to solve problems beyond sanitation. Usable outputs in the form of fertilizers, water, and energy provide resources for communities and create new economic opportunities for communities to build sustainable businesses.

To succeed in changing the world of sanitation and meeting SDG 6, innovators need to show potential users and investors clear, verified evidence that their technologies meet communities’ needs. This verification comes from applying the International Standards (ISO 30500 and ISO 31800).
