STANDARD DEVELOPMENT OF ISO 30500 AND ISO 31800

Ensuring sustainable access to safe sanitation

TÜV SÜD’s leading role in developing ISO 30500 and ISO 31800, which specifies requirements for sanitation technologies, uniquely positions us to guide sanitation innovators toward successful product deployment and lead certification processes.

TWO SANITATION STANDARDS FOR INNOVATION

REVOLUTIONISING STANDARD DEVELOPMENT

Historically, standards were established to regulate products that had already reached the market. The notion of developing a standard for decentralized sanitation was therefore a significant departure from precedent, as no mature technology existed at the time.

ISO 30500 then ISO 31800 turned this traditional model on its head. ISO 30500 set the requirements for a front and backend sanitation solution and ISO 31800 did it for a community-scale backend solution.

This “paradigm shift” in standard development earned praise from ISO:
It is a visionary and ambitious standard which is showing the way towards a solution.”

TÜV SÜD’s role in coordinating the effort and translating aspirational goals into actionable technical requirements resulted in three TÜV SÜD team members receiving ISO Excellence Awards.
