Ensuring the safety of people and the environment
The global sanitation crisis requires groundbreaking solutions backed by trusted performance standards. In collaboration with global stakeholders, TÜV SÜD led the technical development of international standards for off-grid sanitation and now provides unique expertise in helping sanitation innovators ensure their technologies are safe, efficient, effective, and market-ready. The set of standards along with a TÜV SÜD partnership provide an actionable step towards solving the sanitation crisis.
Worldwide, only 2% of human waste is disposed of safely when there is no service chain. While many people lack access to any type of toilet facility, still more use systems that do not provide any type of treatment for the resulting waste. In response to this crisis, the United Nations established Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).
The modern system of sewer infrastructure cannot solve this problem due to its extremely high demands for water, energy, raw materials, and large-scale coordination. New technologies provide the basic expected functions of a user experience while addressing modern day issues like environmental sustainability and effective solutions for the sanitation crisis.

These new toilet technologies are aspirational, but will they work?
To succeed in changing the world of sanitation and meeting SDG 6, innovators need to show potential users and investors clear, verified evidence that their technologies meet communities’ needs. This verification comes from applying the International Standards (ISO 30500 and ISO 31800). As leads in development of these international standards, TÜV SÜD is uniquely positioned to guide and support innovators in meeting these standards, achieving certification and supply communities with user-friendly, effective, sustainable solutions.
