Introduction to Product Safety and Risk Assessment

The course will introduce you to product safety legislation, hazard identification and the steps required to complete a product risk assessment (in accordance with the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) risk assessment guidelines).

You will become familiar with product safety requirements and challenges, including historical examples to illustrate various points. A practical task will be set, in between sessions, on a product of your choice (please select a product before the first session).

Session 1

  • Part 1 Introduction to product safety legislation
  • Part 2 Hazard identification

Session 2

  • Part 3 Data & consumer behaviour / foreseeable use
  • Part 4 Risk assessment methodology

Course objective:

The aim of this two part online training series is to provide you with an introduction to product safety and risk assessment.

You are encouraged to ask questions and be as interactive as possible during these sessions. Please make use of the available resources which you may find beneficial to read through before the first session. The GPSD risk assessment guidelines are 67 pages, if you are limited on time please refer directly to pg. 51-53 on “how to pre-pare a risk assessment – in brief” and if possible, the examples that follow.

About the speaker

Geraldine Cosh

An experienced and committed safety professional with extensive experience in the areas of injury prevention, risk management, and project management, as well as maintaining and adapting effective staff training systems. Geraldine possesses a thorough understanding of the potential risks, injuries and design solutions associated with consumer products.

Geraldine has extensive experience of designing and delivering a range of training courses ranging from a half-day session to 5-day programmes for leading retailers, suppliers and manufacturers of consumer products.

Most recently Geraldine has worked with CTSI (Chartered Trading Standards Institute) and OPSS (Office for Product safety and standards) training over 300 trading standards officers on risk assessment and product safety.
