Façade lighting can make or break the night-time look of a building and is often the most important design consideration. Integrating luminaires into the architecture is key which was the most important aspect of this project. The TÜV SÜD Lighting Design Studio worked with Leonard Architects on various retail shop facades on the large Fort Kinnaird outdoor retail park located off the A1 in the south-east of Edinburgh, Scotland. The original shop fronts were very much dated with unwelcoming frontages that were replaced with high quality, visually appealing frontages. The night-time lighting played a key role.
Once the lighting strategy was defined different lighting techniques on different façades of the shop units were designed then detailing phase started, here the detailing was crucial to ensure the details worked correctly. Working closely with the Lighting Design Studio, Studiotech who are specialists in architectural LED lighting who took the project to site, installed and commissioned the design providing full turnkey lighting solution.
Various recessed linear LED profiles with opal diffusers were carefully detailed into the façade. Long continuous lengths that are ‘dot free’ provides striking lines of light. A bespoke detail was designed to allow the lines of light to cross each other while still being illuminated.
Another unit has a completely different lighting concept. Coloured RGB back lit light boxes create dramatic lighting effects during the evening, the light boxes gradually change colour. This effect gave the client full control of the lighting effect that can be used for marketing purposes such as red could be used for during the busy Christmas period.
It has been noticed that footfall to the retail park has improved greatly as the wow factor lighting draws customers in.
