Benefits of Decision Analysis in Nuclear

When we have a decision to make in life, we would think about what a good outcome would look like, consider what options we have available to us, weigh them up against each other, then choose a way forward. This process is likely done in our heads with little consultation with anybody else.

The process is very similar when we have to do decision making within programmes and projects, however, we have to be much more transparent and collaborative than we might be otherwise. We refer to this decision making process as Decision Analysis, or options appraisal. Decision Analysis is the systematic examination and evaluation of the performance of a set of alternative options.

A nuclear specialist with 21 years’ experience, she has worked with the majority of the UK’s site licensed companies at some point in her career. Her expertise covers multi attribute decision analysis, waste management and environment assessments. Her skills have been deployed to deliver solutions for strategic manufacturing facilities, submarine dismantling and decommissioning projects, legacy ponds waste management and spent fuel management for nuclear new builds.

Karen Storey is a lead consultant at TÜV SÜD and a member of the Decision Analysis Team. Using a range of techniques, including Multi Attribute Decision Analysis, Karen facilitates workshops to support the underpinning of key decisions made for a range of projects across the UK’s nuclear sector as part of safety case submissions. With an interest in high performing teams she takes this learning and applies it to decision workshops to provide better team cohesion and clearly underpinned and justified workshop outcomes.
