The Measurement Focus Group is supported by the UK Government's National Measurement System (NMS). The group focuses on flow measurement and flow-related issues in industry. Club members are invited to attend technical club meetings.
Delegates are primarily from the UK, but we often have presenters from USA, Norway and other parts of Europe. It's typically operators, consultants, manufacturers, service companies and also delegates from the UK Oil & Gas Regulator. The Measurement Focus Group is supported by the UK Government's National Measurement System (NMS). The group focuses on flow measurement and flow-related issues in industry. You can view the presentations from the previous meetings here.

• Committee Overview and publications
• Current projects
• Work with ISO TC 30/05
10:15 Virtual Calibration of Acoustic Sand Detectors, Neil Barton (Xodus)
• Acoustic Sand Detectors (ASDs) are widely used globally for sand management in oil fields, either as uncalibrated detectors or calibrated via sand injection.
• Calibration via sand injection enables optimized sand management with reduced production loss but is not feasible subsea or on certain topsides wells.
• Xodus, Equinor, and ClampOn have collaborated to develop alternative ASD calibration methods, including a software-based correlation called Sandflux and an alternative method using CFD modelling of sand impacts to estimate the ASD response.
• This presentation describes the development of these methods and their validation against historical data from laboratory tests and offshore sand injections.
10:40 Correction for Orifice Plates installed in Reverse Orientation, CFD or Flow Testing, Nadezhda Pashnina (Emerson)
• This presentation covers the effect of two reversed orifice plates on flow measurement in an 18-inch gas metering stream over two years
• Significant measurement errors were evident, leading to independent assessments by two experts to quantify the error
• CFD simulations and clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter testing was conducted to estimate the mismeasurement
• The findings provide insights into correcting flow measurement errors caused by reverse installation of orifice plates using both CFD and flow testing.
11:05 Coffee and networking
11:35 Assessment of Equations of State for CO2-rich Mixtures to Accurately Calculate Thermodynamic Properties and Improve the Management of Carbon Emissions, Edris Joonaki (TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory)
• Thermodynamic modelling of CO2-rich streams in CCUS processes
• Key fluid properties of CO2-rich mixtures for flow metering
• Uncertainty calculations of fluid properties estimations using equations of state
• Identified gaps in industry for the required experimental datasets for the fluid properties of CO2 rich streams
• New Advanced Fluid Properties Test Rig at the TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory
12:00 Leveraging Coriolis Meter Diagnostics to Mitigate Measurement Errors on Liquids with Entrained Gas, Nigel Webster (Corvera)
• High accuracy, low maintenance, low calibration needs, high turndown, and multi-variable measurement make Coriolis meters preferred in many applications
• Coriolis accuracy decreases with bubbly flows, leading to errors in mass, density, and volume measurements, especially from entrained gases
• Coriolis meters include internal diagnostics that can indicate multiphase flow presence
• A patented method uses standard diagnostics to correct real-time errors from entrained gas, applicable via existing data systems without altering meter installations
