Information on the institutes at the HZDR and departments of the VKTA that will be visited
Following a welcome address by the executive boards of both institutions, there will be a choice of various guided tours: at the HZDR, visitors can tour, amongst other facilities, the ELBE – Centre for High-Power Radiation Sources, the Ion Beam Centre and the Centre for Radiopharmaceutical Tumour Research. The VKTA will provide insights into key areas of practical radiation protection, including the "Landessammelstelle des Freistaates Sachsen" for radioactive waste, the "Freimesszentrum", laboratories for environmental and radionuclide analysis, and, optionally, the Rossendorf interim storage facility.

The Elbe Centre for High-Performance Sources:
- The ELBE radiation source (Electron Linear Accelerator for Beams of High Brilliance and Low Emittance) generates various types of secondary beams – including both electromagnetic radiation and particles! The properties of this radiation make ELBE an outstanding research tool for both external users and scientists at the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf.
The Ion Beam Centre:
- The Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research has many years’ expertise in the application of ion beams for the modification or analysis of solid-state surfaces, particularly in semiconductors, metals and metallic alloys.
Centre for Radiopharmaceutical Tumour Research:
- The Institute for Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research addresses issues in the field of radiopharmaceutical tumour research. Chemical, biological and physical research groups collaborate on contributions to molecular imaging and tumour therapy. This work is carried out in close cooperation within the OncoRay framework and in translational research networks such as the DKTK and NCT.

The "Landessammelstelle des Freistaates Sachsen für radioaktive Abfälle":
- The State Collection Centre of the Free State of Saxony for Radioactive Waste is the central point of contact for the disposal of radioactive waste from the medical, industrial, educational and research sectors in the federal states of Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. This is where the safe interim storage of radioactive waste takes place, which those obliged to deliver it must dispose of at the State Collection Centre in accordance with Section 5(4) of the AtEV.
The "Freimesszentrum":
- The VKTA possesses a wealth of experience in the field of decision-making measurements and clearance. Since the early 1990s, measurements have been carried out on plant equipment and the VKTA’s own containers, as well as for client commissions, and compliance with clearance values and scenarios has been verified for the regulatory authority.
Environmental & Radionuclide Analysis Laboratories:
- Using modern analytical methods, the accredited laboratory for environmental and radionuclide analysis can carry out various tasks relating to the complex declaration of residual materials.
