REACH is a European Union regulation that ensures the safe use of chemicals by requiring companies to register chemicals they manufacture or import over 1 ton per year. Introduced in 2007, it evaluates risks to human health and the environment, authorizing or restricting chemical use accordingly. Companies must prove their chemicals are safe, promoting safer alternatives. Annex XVII of REACH lists restrictions on specific hazardous substances, while the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list identifies chemicals that require authorization due to their severe health or environmental risks.
